UC Irvine falls to top-ranked USC in Water Polo

Mitch Wise, Bojan Hrlec score three goals each for ‘Eaters

Mitch Wise scored three goals in Thursday night's loss to USC.

Mitch Wise and Bojan Hrlec scored three goals apiece, but eighth-ranked UC Irvine fell to No. 1 USC, 18-7, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Anteater Aquatics Complex Thursday night.

Hrlec scored both UCI goals in the first quarter as USC took a 5-2 lead at the end of the first period.

The Trojans (18-0, 4-0 MPSF) outscored UCI 6-1 in the second quarter to build an 11-3 halftime lead.

Kostas Genidounias led the undefeated Trojans with a game-high four goals. Five other USC players scored two goals each in the win.

USC’s Rex Butler opened the third quarter with a goal to give the Trojans a 12-3 lead before Wise and Alan Robertson answered to pull UCI within 12-5 at the 5:08 mark. Stephen Siri and Butler then hit back-to-back goals to extend USC’s lead back to nine.

UCI (14-6, 0-3) travels to fourth-ranked Stanford Saturday for an MPSF game at noon.
