This year at Red Bull Switchboard over 500 students were able to experience the ultimate California action sports day: surfing in the morning and snowboarding right after. Many UCI students were in attendance along with pro snowboarder John Jackson and pro surfer Jaime Sterling.

Getting into the Groove: Forming a Great Study Group

Studying alone can be a disaster: you can be easily distracted, become bored, and lose focus as soon as that first text pops up on your phone. Instead of sequestering yourself in your room or in the recesses of the library, consider forming a study group to conquer whatever you need to know for class.

When forming a study group, it’s important to consider several things. First, how many members does your study group need? Typically, four to six members is a good group. Three or less members may not be enough to cover all the material, and more than six may lead to too many minds, and end up distracting the group. Second, do different members learn differently? This is a key question to consider as different learning styles will be able to present information in different ways, which will benefit the group. Third, do everyone’s schedules match? This may seem like a simple question, but all students have different schedules, so it’s important to ensure everyone can make a weekly meeting.

An effective study group is usually organized one of two ways. The first way is to have everyone be responsible for everything. Then, once a week, the members meet to review and discuss the material covered in class as well as any outside reading. The second way to run a study group is to have each member responsible for a particular aspect and then present it to the other members. The second method can be further broken down depending on the type of material being covered. For example, in an English class, if the teacher assigns chapters 1-4, each member could take a chapter and then provide notes and discuss the key elements. Or, everyone could read the four chapters, but each member would provide notes on an assigned aspect such as character development, literary devices, point of view, and historical relevance.

Study groups exist as a great resource to understanding material being covered in class. It’s important to find committed group members who will make weekly meetings, and who are able to provide notes on their assigned topics. Make the group fun, and consider meeting at different places to keep it interesting: the student center, the quad, or a local pizza place are all great options.

Park Far Away

Instead of trying to find the closest parking spot available, park in the spot farthest from the store. Walking those extra feet really add up if you do it consistently, whenever you’re running errands or treating yourself to a nice meal out. Exceptions to this rule should always be dark or dimly lit parking lots—your personal safety should always take precedence.

Take the Stairs

Skip elevators and escalators and take the stairs. In malls, in office buildings, and in school buildings, opt to work out your lower half and commit to walking up and walking down the stairs. Stairs exist as a great cardio workout as well, as they help tone the entire body. Want to burn extra calories? Get those arms involved and pumping, and consider taking the steps two at a time.

Stretch Twice a Day

Get into the habit of stretching when you wake up and before you go to bed. Stretching is a great way to help the body relieve tension, improve circulation, and increase flexibility. A simple ten to fifteen minute routine should be adequate to stretch all the major parts of your body. An effective stretch should be held for at least fifteen seconds. For those looking for a more challenging routine, try a quick yoga workout twice daily.

Everyone’s got a busy schedule, and those schedules will only become more hectic during the upcoming holidays. Work with your schedule, and include brief exercise when you can. Keeping your body engaged reduces stress, improves focus, and can increase the quality of your sleep. These three tips are easy to incorporate into any lifestyle—what are you waiting for?

UC Irvine rejects ASUCI divestment push

UC Irvine’s student government, Associated Students of UCI (ASUCI), has unanimously passed a recommendation that the campus divest itself of investments with several companies that do business with Israel.

According to the University of California, Irvine, such divestment is not the policy of the campus, nor is the policy of the University of California. he UC Board of Regents’ policy requires this action only when the U.S. government deems it necessary. No such declaration has been made regarding Israel.

In the spirit and practice of active engagement with all peoples of that region, UCI has been extremely pleased with recent global collaboration between leaders and researchers here and those at top universities around the world, including Israel. The campus looks forward to continued constructive exchanges that benefit our students, faculty and community.

Around 2am last night, I happened to see the ESPN bottom marquee. It read:

“Mike D’Antoni agrees to coach Lakers”

W.T.F. I could not believe what I was seeing.

Initial reactions to this deal from the Laker fanbase has been… let’s see, uhh… extremely negative. Let’s all be real, last night when we went to sleep, everyone was pretty much acting like Phil Jackson was the coach already. I mean, wasn’t it just a mere formality to announce it to the public? He could have probably walked onto that court on Tuesday night against the Spurs and no one would be surprised.

Apparently, the move to hire D’Antoni was a unanimous decision by GM Mitch Kupchak, Jim Buss (who makes most of the decisions for the team nowadays, and owner Jerry Buss. According to multiple news outlets, negotiations between the team and D’Antoni occurred late last night, after the Lakers game against the Kings, before they ultimately decided to give him the job.

However, this directly conflicts with reports from Sunday where Phil Jackson met with Lakers management and had until Monday to decide. In a statement released by Phil’s people, he said,

“… we concluded with a hand shake and an understanding that I would have until Monday (today) to come back to them with my decision. I did convey to them that I did have the confidence that I could do the job. I was awakened at midnight on Sunday by a phone call from Mitch Kupchak. He told me that the Lakers had signed Mike D’Antoni to a 3-year agreement and that they felt he was the best coach for the team.”

He concluded by thanking Laker fans, who have been begging for his return, stating,

“I am gratified by the groundswell of support from the Laker Fans who endorsed my return and it is the principal reason why I considered the possibility.”

What the hell is going on??

Some speculation for the move is that management wants to move away from the Phil era and into a revamped “Showtime,” which could possibly happen considering D’Aintoni’s all-offense-no-defense coaching style. Others yet say that Phil wanted too much from the organization, like ownership stake and travel restrictions. And more say those reports are complete bull.

Player reactions, Kobe and Dwight particularly, have been generally positive, albeit the clear disappointment. Will be interesting as more comes out.

Since the dawn of time, well, more like the end of 1994, the question has been asked:

Will an NFL team ever make it back to the City of Angels?

Last month, Los Angeles city council approved plans to build a new stadium downtown, right next door to the Staples Center, as well as plans for a modernized convention center.

However! Construction on Farmers Field (as it will be called) cannot start until AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group), the company that owns such venues as the Staples Center and the backing of the project, finds an NFL team to move there. It will take about four years for the stadium to be completed from the time that an NFL team commits to a long term deal, whenever that may be.

If any team wants in for next year, they would need to apply between January and February.

Cue jeopardy music.

In it’s long and illustrious sports history, LA has only had two teams: the Rams and Raiders. Both teams simultaneously played their last game in the city on Christmas Eve of 1994, meaning there hasn’t been a team in the biggest (along with New York) sports market in the United States for nearly 18 years.

Of the top five markets, LA is the only one not to have an NFL team. New York, Baltimore-Washington area, San Francisco, and Chicago all have teams in all four major American sports. In fact, LA even has two teams each in the NBA, NHL, and MLB.

Of course, moving a team is not that simple. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of business mumbo-jumbo that I can’t even begin to fathom or explain right now. Just doing the research on this very topic was making my brain jump in circles around my ass. Things like ownership percentage, TV deals, and finding the “right” team play a huge factor. You have to also remember that having a pro team is a great honor for any city that has one, and best believe every city will fight to keep their team from moving.

Too bad we don’t have Ari Gold working on the deal anymore. He would have gotten it done.
